The ethnic identity of adolescents in Ukrainian-Russian bilinguishing conditions

Abstract

In this article, which is devoted to the processes of formation of ethnic identity, the authors consider the issues related to the factors that influence the formation of ethnic identity. The authors consider speech as one of the most important factors in the formation of ethnic identity, and through it, the others as well, i.e.: professional, religious, cultural, socio-political, etc. At the same time, the problem of the formation of ethnic identity in a bilingual environment is far from being sufficiently studied.The article presents the results of the study of the manifestation of ethnic identity in adolescents, in which the affective component predominates over the cognitive one. A certain general level of satisfaction with their ethnicity does not always coincide with their verbal identification. The data obtained testify to the fact that teaching in Ukrainian-language classes contributes to easy switching from Ukrainian to Russian and vice versa.The analysis of literary sources on the problem of linguistic identity revealed the absence of any satisfactory methods. Therefore, to study the subjective assessment of the attitude to either of the languages, the authors’ questionnaire for adolescents was developed, which consists of ten open-ended questions aimed at investigating the level of awareness of their ethnic identity, at the definition of their native language, their attitude toward it, as well as the attitude to everyday switching from Ukrainian to Russian and vice versa in various spheres of life.In the conclusion, the authors mention the individual characteristics of respondents with low ethnic identity.
